The Elephant's Shoes by Charity Yoder is a wonderful story of loss, friendship, and love that will inspire young readers. An elephant wakes up and remembers that she has no shoes, so she makes the decision to go on a walk in the hopes of finding shoes. She does find one perfect pair, but her other two feet are still cold out in the open air. So, she journeys on until she finds a pair that shines just like the sun. She falls in love with them and says: “I will never take them off, and they will never go away.” But she quickly becomes curious, thinking there might still be an even better pair out there, so she leaves her shining pair on a shelf and hurries out. She eventually finds a pair of sneakers, and heels that make her want to dance, and a pair of boots, but she’d lost her favorite pair of shoes. Her feet get sore and tender. Then one day, while she is tired and resting by the tree, another elephant approaches her. He is happy and all smiles. Their encounter starts a friendship that doesn’t just take away the loneliness but brings back her favorite pair of shoes.

The Elephant's Shoes by Charity Yoder was read to me by my six-year-old daughter who adored the colorful illustrations and the plot points. “Why did she have to put her shoes on the shelf, she said she will never leave them?” She asked me this when she got to the point where the elephant missed her favorite pair of shoes. She was able to pick up on the themes: making wrong choices, having a good friend, enjoying fun company. This book teaches young readers that true friendships expand their world and take away loneliness. It also restores what is lost. Beautifully written with diction that is accessible and illustrations that are telling. My daughter says, “Let’ em give a name to the elephants next time.” Fantastic!"
